Patient Guidelines

Pre-Treatment Instructions

• Avoid taking non-medically necessary aspirin, Advil, ibuprofen, Aleve, Naprosyn, Motrin, Vitamin E, ginseng, Ginko Biloba, CoQ 10, Omega-3 fatty acids, or St. John's Wort for 10 days prior to your treatment.

These drugs and supplements may increase the risk of bleeding or bruising.

• If you take any "blood thinning agents for medical/preventive purposes, please inform us.

• Avoid alcoholic beverages for 3 days prior to your procedure, as these also can cause bleeding and bruising.

• An arnica supplement before and after your treatment may help decrease the possibility of bleeding and bruising (see below) - available for purchase at our office.

For the next 4 hours

• Make the expressions we are trying to diminish 15 times every 15 minutes for the next 4 hours. In other words, contract the treated muscles by squinting, frowning or raising your eyebrows. This increases the uptake of the toxin by the muscle.

• Do not lie down in a horizontal position; remain upright (sitting, standing, etc.).

• Do not rub area of treatment.

• No heavy lifting.

• No bending down.

• No exercising.

• Avoid excessive sun and heat exposure to the treated area as this may increase breakdown of the toxin

Possible Side Effects of Toxin Injection

• You may develop a headache (especially after your first treatment). Take Tylenol as needed. Avoid aspirin and NSAIDs if possible.

You may notice some slight bruising for a couple of days.

• You may cover the area with makeup if desired.

What to Expect from Toxin Injection?

• The results of your toxin treatment should be observed within the next 7-10 days. Maximum benefit usually occurs 2 weeks after injection.

When to Return to the Office?

• You should return in two weeks for post-treatment evaluation especially if there is still too much movement, something looks asymmetric, eyelids look low or are peaked, etc. Many of these issues can be corrected quite easily.

• We suggest re-treatment in about 2-4 months to maintain maximum benefits.

If you have any concerns about your treatment, please contact the office.
