An actinic keratosis (AK) is a pre-cancerous lesion caused by sun damage or indoor tanning. Most people develop multiple patches of these rough, dry, scaly patches of discolored skin. Patients with AKs should see a dermatologist regularly since these spots can turn into a type of skin cancer called squamous cell carcinoma, and early detection is key for effective treatment.
