Alopecia is the technical term for hair loss and consists of a variety of types with many different causes

Androgenetic alopecia, hormonally induced hair loss, affects both men and women and is a very common cause of hair loss. Another very common type is telogen effluvium which is shedding of hair usually as a result of a stressor acting on the body. Alopecia areata, also common, results in patches of hair loss and traction alopecia occurs from tight hairstyles. Hair loss can also result from medications, nutritional states, and acute or chronic illness. It is important to seek the help of a dermatologist as early as possible to determine the cause of alopecia and the ideal treatment for restoring hair growth. If hair loss involves inflammation and/or scarring, early diagnosis and intervention can be essential to preserve hair.
