Molluscum contagiosum is characterized by groups of flesh to pink colored bumps that have a central plug resembling a pimple. These lesions are most common in children of pre-school and elementary school age. The bumps may turn red as the body fights the virus, and although usually painless, molluscum can become itchy. This common skin condition is caused by a virus that can be easily spread from person to person, especially by sharing clothing or towels. Molluscum generally clears on its own after 12 to 18 months, however, cryotherapy, curettage (scraping bumps off the skin), lasers and topical treatments such as trichloroacetic acid (TCA) or cantharone can be used to help resolve this condition.
