A harmless skin condition caused by an overgrowth of yeast on the skin, tinea versicolor leads to spots of discolored skin that can be dry, itchy and scaly. Most commonly tinea versicolor is exacerbated by sun exposure since the yeast prevents the skin from tanning and causes patches that are lighter than surrounding skin. Less commonly the patches are pink to brown. Anti-fungal products and medications are the primary treatment for tinea versicolor.
