The medical term for dry skin is xerosis. Mild cases of flaky or scaly skin can usually be improved with use of mild cleansers and appropriate moisturizers. More serious xerosis can lead to cracking, bleeding and infection of the skin. Proper care can alleviate xerosis in most cases.
